For a six year old - a Wii or a computer?

My son uses our old computer. Its about 5 years old and just about dead. I am wondering if we should buy him a new computer or a Nintendo Wii. He currently only uses the computer to play online games, to listen to music and to print out pictures. Can he do those things on a Wii? Whatever we get will have to last approximately 5 years. Can a Wii do email? instant messaging? research for school projects? Can we block his access to undesireable websites?

On the flip side - our PS2 is about to become obsolete. How are computer games in comparison to Wii games? Keep in mind we are talking about a six year old. His favorite games on the PS2 are Spongebob and Cars. For a six year old - a Wii or a computer?
Get him a computer. The wii will play games and have email but in the end you can do a million times more things with a pc. Alot of the same games can be obtained for a pc that you can get for the wii. The wii will only do email with others who also have a wii, messaging is also confined to users who have a wii. Web browser function is not yet fully functional for the wii. Wii games so far have not been great, the interaction with the games is cool and new but the game content has been lacking for the younger audience. If you want something that can do every one of the functions your refering to i'd stick to the computer. Otherwise the psp may have a usb keyboard soon and you can do mp3's email, web search, games etc.
a wii is alot more enjoyable and computers can get viruses.

a wii would be better its funner, easier and more reliable.
computer, it's going to be easier for a six year old to understand, and funner for him to playFor a six year old - a Wii or a computer?
I think a new computer would be better, as it can not only provide him with ntertainment and games, but help with his school work. In my opinion, computers have more games than Wii, and i think you get kind of tired from playing it lol. By the way just block those 'undesirable sites' in your internet options.
games wise the wii is perfect for a six year old but as far as researching papers right now no maybe in years to come, but my best advice would be to get both and the wii is only $249, and if you go to a video gamestore you can trade in ps2 for store credit and get the wii for even cheaper. then you could always get a referbished computer if you wish to save money. the wii doesn't do any of that stuff right now but maybe later.
a wii is more fun but a computer will definately last longer
A Wii is a great choise for a child of this age. A computer would be a little to complex for him. A Wii is very simple and you can even check the weather on it. And its very fun with its motion sensored activity so its fun for the whole family
Definitley a computer. Lots of people are known to throw the controller at the tv and break it. You don't even have to throw it just let it slip by accident and there goes money out of the bank. Hope this helps :).
well if he plays a role playing game he would prefer a computer ...

if he likes video games with moving around.... get a Wii
Well I'll tell you, I'm only 14, but I know a fair amount about modern tech. I'm going to exclude the weird fact that a 6 year old has a PS2 and is playing online games already.I didn't start until about 9. Anyways, the Wii has no features of a computer. It does not have a browser or IMing or emailing. It does not even have a wide variety of online games to play with other friends. Therefore not having internet, it is useless for ANYTHING related to school. And also there is nothing to worry about, except for the rating of the game. This goes for any game console. The key word in there is game. Computers have games too but mostly is for work. So I'd go with the computer because that serves dual purposes. I don't see what school projects he could be doing now at d or even until 3rd Grade, so he can use it for both online games restricted to a certain level and work in the future.
Get a new computer. It may be more expensive (sometimes) but it's worth it. The Wii is good, though. But, I think that it may be a little fragile for him to screw around with. Computers will ultimately last a lot longer than a video game console. It's just that you may have to upgrade the hardware every so often. I upgrade one component a year.

Computer: +Multi-tasking, +easier internet, +online games, -a little complex

Wii: +Fun games, +motion sensored Wii motes, +more child friendly, -one task at a time, -slow internet browser, -can't print
i would say a wii because its hard to play on the internet without getting violated with porn and all that stuff at 6 years old
