How did Canada get so big without being a military jauggernaut?

The geography of Canada is vary diverse and covers the second largest landmass in the World. How did this happen without Canada ever being a military force or an empire? How did Canada get so big without being a military jauggernaut?"How did this happen without Canada ever being a military force or an empire?"

Uhh, yeah, we actually WERE up until the late 40's and early 50's.

First of all, yes a lot of the land was barren. But that isn鈥檛 really answering the question.

How did Canada get so big without being a military jauggernaut? No, the Queen has no say in today鈥檚 Canada. She is their in name because of tradition. If we want to make a law, we pass it through our democratic system, Britain has no say. But they don鈥檛 need to have say anyway, so we鈥檙e all happy, right?

Western Expansion %26amp; Settlement. Canada has a military force. Back then, BC was afraid of being annexing by the Americans because they were so cut off from the rest of Canada and because the Americans wanted the gold (gold rush). So we made the railway from coast to coast

How did Canada get so big without being a military jauggernaut?(Steel Ribbon, transcontinental railway). Transported defense, unified

country, increased economy and then encouraged settlers to move there (natural resources, jobs etc.). The west got more developed and we went North and expanded.

I think we fought for land with America once. Alaska, anyone. Needless to say we lost! Also, the British helped us somewhat back then, but then they decided that they weren鈥檛 gaining enough with supporting us. Ended our trade agreement etc. But that is another unit in history.

France sent some troops here to settle.. and they grew (which eventually became Quebec). We have two types of gouvernement. Gouvernement Federal et Gouvernement Provincial (so the provinces could keep their identity).

After Canada was formed in 1867, we sent people to rush out West to claim land and settle it before the Americans could do it. After which we bought land from British companies to have sovreignty over those territories.

I remember from gr.7 history, we only had one rebellion by Metis (half native half white) settlers out west but most of the time we settled with natives tribes like the Cree and Blackfoot so we could expand faster. Also the Canadian Pacific Railway to British Columbia helped too
canada is part of the brittish commonwealth, that has been the world's biggest military jauggernaut since the romans and persians!

without the negativity some of these others had.... canada does have a large mass of sparsely populated land.... it is not empty anywhere even in the far far north, just very sparse of people
Canada may be the 2nd largest country in the world, but that's only in AREA....not population!

Canada actually has a very low population compared to the amount of land they have. Much of it is very cold, harsh and uninhabitable.

Actually, when you consider the low population of Canada, they actually are a decently-strong economic %26amp; military power
It's worthless land. Too cold for inhabitation. Who would live there?
Most of Canada is a very harsh environment. Most of the population of Canada resides in the southern and eastern portions of the country (Ontario [39 %]and Quebec [23%]). Canada has always been under the control of the British. Even now, it is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as Queen of Canada and Head of State. It was part of an empire.
They eat a lot of back bacon and drink Molsons. How come Australia didn't do the same and they eat vegamite and drink Fosters/
because when it was first formed it was a barren land with no recources whatsoever. only later it was discovered that oil is a recource, but that was far later than the colonisation ocurred. the point being: no settler wanted barren, mountainous land. back then, pure water and fertile land were all that was needed. so no one cared if someone had those mountains all to themselves
Canadians tend to have a large territorial imperative. Then you must consider that we do everything official in French and English, (requiring double the space), and a good deal of our population believe that they are living in "islands" of land area that belongs to them and is not a part of Canada. But the main reason for the size of Canada relates to the fact that most of us want to live close to the border of the U.S.A., (while insisting we are different than Americans), secure in the knowledge that there is a good deal of relatively empty spaces to the north, ("the true north strong and free"). It is very important to Canadians to know that wild lands and vast areas still exist in our country.

For a multi-cultural nation to do all that a great deal of space is required.
