How are women in the military perceived by the general public?

I've been in the military for a little over a year now, and women are generally separated into two categories-witches and sluts-by military men. How does the rest of society view womens' roles in the armed forces? How are women in the military perceived by the general public?I was in the AF 23 years and rarely had the experience you are describing. Yeah, there were a few misinformed people, but they were the exception, not the rule. And I either laughed it off or got in their face when it happened (depending on the situation). However, I was an officer and that does make a difference.

I suspect part of the problem is that you are still very junior in rank. Hazing happens to all junior personnel, including the guys. Bringing your gender into the situation is, unfortunately, natural with young juvenile guys. If you stick it out, the razzing will give way to respect, because they will appreciate that you were strong enough to not let it phase you.

If what you are experiencing is more than mild disrespect, remember you do have options. Sexual harrassment is as wrong in the military as it is in the civilian world. I personally got a couple senior NCOs to take early retirement, but their actions were particularly aggregious.

Live your life and be proud of who you are. People who are around you long enough will eventually see the patriotic and capable person you are. For the rest of them...they aren't worth knowing anyway. How are women in the military perceived by the general public?

Witches, sluts, and dykes.
Love you for what you are doing kick A--
We are always going to get hell from men and society for being in the military. Most of us are neither sluts or witches. It is just those some that give us a bad name. Hold you ground and be proud of who you are.
That is a very good question. I wonder the same. I am also in the military for a little over a year and I'm wondering the same thing. I wish more people would be more specific and honest and detailed.

My oppinion is that people who appriciate what the military does for the US do not discriminate and separte us from the guys. We both do the same thing...train and work hard to accomplish/ complete "the mission."

They say that we are in the military 24/7, but really, I feel like I did when I had a civilan job... when you're at work, you're at work, and same with being at home. Think of it like this, when you're at work you're in the uniform, and when you're not you're in civilan clothes, right? so you're just like anyone else when at home, and the kind of person you are on your off time (slut, butch, nice, prissy, ect) is what will form other people's oppion of you. And when you're at work your co-workers will make their oppinions based on work related things. --just like it is outside the military life.

Don't worry too much. If you are a good person and have friends and you like how your life is, then why worry what other people think? All it is are thoughts, and those can change.

I think that if you work hard at your job, no matter what it is, and are respectful and helpful then you are not a witch, and as far as being a slut- that's you're personal life.

Just do your job, do it well, keep on top of your personal life and you are golden.

I appreciate what you do.
