What are characteristics required for a person to succeed in a military "career" in older times?

Im not referring to nowaday army, but HISTORICALLY.

People like past successful military leaders, like

Rodion Malinovsky.

I do not believe in military promotion, but this is more of historic interest to me.

Were they neat people who did things on time and on schedule, detail people, or were they spontaneous and sporadic, but sometimes disorganized, like scientists?

What were their main distinguishale traits?

Did they keep their room usually clean, or was a it always a terrible meess? What are characteristics required for a person to succeed in a military "career" in older times?Whether it be in olden times or now, their rooms were neat and orderly, they were on time and followed schedules. Spontaneity has it's place and is a big help. The element of surprise.
