What are the chances of being discharged from the military due to high blood pressure?

A friend of mine enlisted in the National Guard. He made it through his first set of physicals perfectly and is now at Basic Training. When he had phone privileges, he stated that he was found to have outrageously high blood pressure and may face either a general or medical discharge. BP can be taken care of with prescription medication. Depending on how bad it is, they MIGHT want to send him home..It's possible. Army Doctors don't always make the brightest decisions. Plus, I'm sure there's more to it than just high blood pressure (if they're considering discharging him).



Tell your friend to lay off the fried foods, the salty foods, and just stick to main line chow. BP can be controlled with diet and the help of medicine. Trust me, I came back from Iraq with high BP about 2 years ago. Also came back from Afghanistan with high BP earlier this year. The Army dining facilities are horrible for this cause. It gets even worse overseas when KBR runs the chow halls. Either time I was noted as having high BP, I was never considered for discharge in any way/shape/form. Granted, they've invested 12 years in me...and only a few weeks in your friend....but still I fail to see the logic of kicking someone out for something so fixable.

The chances are high. Medical will give you a chance to bring it down through medications, diet and exercise.
