How to comfort your girlfriend about you joining the military?

Well, im only 17 and when I turn 18 i was planning on joining the military. Me and my girlfriend have talked about this and she is very discomforted about the situation. 3 of her uncles have died and her friends brother has just recently came back from iraq and he is crazy. She said that she supports me but would rather not loose me and i promised her before i went to war i would marry her. Ive been thinking about this a lot and its just got my puzzled. She won't stand in the way of something you want to do. My boyfriend has always wanted to join the marines. I wouldn't wanna see him go but I'll support him if he does.
