How does North Korea maintain such a realtively large military even though it is so poor?

Even though it's very poor, they maintain a large fleet of forces in many areas. How is it possible for them to get hold of/make military equipment so cheaply? At all. They don't care if their citizens starve to death and have no healthcare so they can afford to spend money on their military.



North Korea is also a gangster state and they make money through all kinds of illegal activities. "Super notes" are first class counterfeit currency that they make well there.
