How do I prepare my son for the military?

I think my 6 year old son will grow up to join the military when he turns 18 because on his father's side they have multi-generations who serve in the military. How do I prepare my son for life in the military when he turns 18? I already have him enrolled in swim class. Should I do boy scouts too?How do I prepare my son for the military?Swimming, boy scouts, and other sports/activities are great for a young boy, but he's only six right now so you should not be thinking about preparing him for the military. He will make that choice when the time comes- and be ready to accept it if he does not want to enlist. It's his life afterall...How do I prepare my son for the military?
Yu shouldn't push him to do anything he doesn't wanna do, I'm not saying you are but be prepared if he wants to do something else with his life... yyou should discus this when he's older and ujndersstands things more and if he wants to go intoii the military then he should go into one of the many Army shops around and get info from books and ask people who have already been in the military.

:)How do I prepare my son for the military?Swimming and boyscouts is a great idea. It's never a bad idea to have your children involved in activities. However, just becasue you have multi-generations that are in the military does not mean your choose to do so. You might want to make this evaluation when he's older, say more like 15 or 16.How do I prepare my son for the military?
ROTC in high school.

helps him build confidence and it will be well worth it.

trust me i'm in ROTC going to the Air Force.

yellow pages for swim classes. How do I prepare my son for the military?I think anything that you can do to facilitate a boy's natural desire to get out into life would be good. Swim lessons are great. I was in the scouts and loved it. Sports, but only if he wants to. Any kind of skill that he can learn growing up, shooting at rifle ranges, karate classes, clubs, anything social. All of that will help him in anything that he might want to do in life, including the army.

About the only thing I would guard against is pushing him too much. Try to help him reach his dreams, not your dreams. Try to facilitate, not push. On the other hand, making him do his school lessons is good. How do I prepare my son for the military?
When he's older shooting ranges too!

How would you feel if you were in the military and found out somebody that lives with you is gay?

In other words should we really get rid of the don't ask don't tell policy?

Would you be in the military if you knew all these homos were around you?How would you feel if you were in the military and found out somebody that lives with you is gay?we had a case in our battalion but the straight roommate didnt have any issues until the "gay" military member started sharing same bed with other unknown guys on the weekends ,lets say that we had (NCO's) to move out the straight guy out because he could no longer work or sleep because of it. gay guy ended up having the room by himself lol because it keep happening with all the new roommates. How would you feel if you were in the military and found out somebody that lives with you is gay?
This answer is very anecdotal. 13,000 veterans have been thrown out of the military since the Don't Ask Don't Tell (Don't Pursue) policy was put into place. Very few people even know that the name has Don't Pursue in it.

Women have been threatened with being called lesbian if they wouldn't put out.

How would you feel if you were in the military and found out somebody that lives with you is gay?Haha, My fiances well one of his roomates was gay at Basic, and it was really hysterical to be honest. He didnt plan to tell anyone he was gay but it was obvious, and he never said it allowed, but on his FB he had him and his partner, and he really was the sweetest guy him and my fiance still chat once in a while, and there was no problems at all..There were a few men who didnt approve but those who knew and accepted it, kept it to themselves and saw him for who he really was.. Btw he is a great american and soldier so there should be NO discriminations
I wouldnt care and I wouldnt out them...if they tried to touch me or do somethin like then I'd knock his head off.

People are in now and know homos are around them its jus that we dont know who (Sometimes we do tho, I gotta flaming E7 in my shop...its obvious...VERY obvious).

Anyway I think the policy should stay...if they boink dudes in their free time I dont need to know...its about being professional. In the military we are (Or should be) held to a higher standard...someone bein gay is none of my business...but they shouldnt throw it in our faces either like they deserve special treatment. The military doesnt exist to make everyone feel cute and special...if they want they should get a civilian job that can provide that...How would you feel if you were in the military and found out somebody that lives with you is gay?Contrary to popular myth being gay doesn't make one a sexual pervert. It just means he likes men instead of women. Gays are no more likely to be rapists or sexual predators than are straights (in fact they are less likely to be rapists or predators). Having a gay guy in your barracks is nothing to be concerned about. Funny how straight men find lesbian sex a turn on but are revolted at the thought that two men might have sex.

MYOB is my motto. How would you feel if you were in the military and found out somebody that lives with you is gay?
It is a scientific fact, discovered in 1956, that homosexuality is not a disorder.

That means that all forms of discrimination against gays are unscientific and irrational.

It means gay people are just as good as heteros.

That's all you need to know. Everything else is minor detail.
There is no outfit in the military that does not have any openly gay men. There are few secrets. Anyone that cannot follow orders regarding the sexuality of others or on any other subject is not fit for military service. How would you feel if you were in the military and found out somebody that lives with you is gay?
At one time Blacks were barred from the military, and then it was woman and now it is gays. This too, shall pass. People have had this philosophy NIMB. All the fences have been taken down. So it will be with gays. Get real
It works perfectly fine in other developed countries. America is way behind with this, kinda pathetic really. America used to be the beacon to freedom and is now a parody of itself.
Sweet pea, we've always had gay people.

The people I've "strongly suspected" were gay, were excellent at their jobs. If they aren't sleeping with me (or my husband) it doesn't concern me.
If he leaves me alone, I will leave him alone. But if even one time he makes any kind of pass at me or touches me in an inappropriate manner, he gets turned in.
Yes i would be in the military just but i wouldnt talk or have anything to do with them.

  • How do I become a doctor for the military?

I've always been interested in becoming a doctor in the military, but lately I've become more and more interested in doing it for the military specifically. How do I go about this? College, military, then Medical School? Someone please help. How do I become a doctor for the military? One way is to go to West Point, but only 2% of the class goes on to medical school.

Second way is to talk to an ROTC recruiter. There is a program where they will pay for medical school, but I think its eight years you owe after they pay for it. If you go to regular ROTC for college for pre-med, then get selected for medical school, they put you in a special program. Same thing works for lawyers and

Third way is to go to college and medical school on your own, then contact a recruiter go direct commission. How do I become a doctor for the military?
Go to your local college and talk to their ROTC program, or get a regular recruiter to hook you up with an officer recruiter. There are programs to get the military to pay for your undergrad and med school, and then you only owe 4 years of active duty service (plus 4 years inactive ready reserve) for all that free schooling. How do I become a doctor for the military?mxyw is correct - if you go to USUHS (sweeeeet - mil pays for every last thing) you would 8 years and if you go to a civilian med school (on the military dime) then you would owe 7. What's the best way to join the military and still have a college degree?

My son is in high school and is interested in the military AND college. I've heard of getting a college degree then joining and I've heard of joining with the intention of them paying for college. But I don't really know what to tell him that would be true.

Can anyone help me with some answers? What's the best way to join the military and still have a college degree?I recently got out of the Air Force so I'll give you the information that I know. You're correct that there are a number of ways of going about entering the military and obtaining a degree.

If your son wants to pursue his degree now then he should look into a ROTC program. This program allows the individual to go to school on the militarys dollar, while having specific requirements of them during the four year process. Its sort of a premilitary training experience. He will be required to keep up with physical requirements, at the school I go to now one day a week they wear their dress uniform to class and he will be required to attend specific functions. When he has completed his degree he will then owe the military 4-6 years of his time but he will be an Officer in the armed forces rather than enlisted personnel. Biggest benefit here...once hes finished school he'll be paid as an Officer.

Another option is to enlist and sign up the Montgomery GI Bill, also referred to as MGIB or just GI Bill. He can enlist for 4-6 years and while at basic training he can choose to sign up for the GI Bill. During the first year of his enlistment $100 a month will be automatically withdrawn from his paycheck and put into an education fund, at the end of his enlistment he can then go to school using the money from this fund. I know that $1200 doesn't sound like much, and it isn't, but the return is fabulous. Those who have signed up and contributed to the MGIB currently have around $40,000 to go to school with. You can go to almost any college or trade school. Once he is accepted to the Univ. he will need to go to the VA office, usually right next to the financial aid office, and fill out some paperwork. When all is said and done he will receive a monthly stipend of $1075 in order to pay for his schooling or living expenses. Most schools will extend the due date for their tuition and fees knowing that the GI Bill pays in the rear so that he will have the entire semester to pay the school what its owed. Keep in mind that while your son is enlisted he can also take classes, online or at the local college, and the service will pay for 100% tuition up to appx $4500 a year. If he has signed up for the GI Bill he can then 'top off' meaning he can tap into his GI Bill money to pay for anything above and beyond the $4500 a year. Also, your son will only have one opportunity to sign up for the GI Bill. If he chooses not to hes out the $40000 to go to school. There is no changing of the mind, no I meant to, nothing, he has to sign up for it while in basic training or hes out.

The last option that I can think of is to join the Guard or Reserves. This is something that I'm not very familiar with but my understanding is that they allow you to use GI Bill money without having you pay into it. I'm not sure how you pay this back or if you will then owe the military time but it is something that the two of you can look into together.

Good luck to you and your son! What's the best way to join the military and still have a college degree?
I suggest going to college first then join the military if he still wants to. If your kid is responsible enough he should go to college. Military is very demanding job and it requires a lot of maturity, discipline and patience. If your kid doesn't possess these traits then he will have a hard time serving in the military. If he does join the military will instill these values. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck. What's the best way to join the military and still have a college degree?I'm going to chime in on this one too.

I am currently Active Duty Navy. A lot of the answers above are correct, MGIB, ROTC. What they fail to mention is that Yes it is possible to get a degree while in the military. Almost all military commanders highly encourage all troops to get their degree. The military is becoming smarter and more technially advanced.

I've been active for 18 years now, and do have my Associate Arts Business Admin, and currently starting my Bachelor Science Criminal Justice. The program I'm using to pay for my college is Tuition Assistance. Tuition assistance pays 100% of college tuition for the military member. Although there are some restriction as the how much is paid, and how many classes can be taken, it is possible to get college paid for. A service member can even use the MGIB while on active duty to cover what TA doesn't cover.

Every base will have college office that will help guide the member to which programs are best. They also will have representatives from different local colleges and universities. These reps can give the member an idea of what his experience and training will get him in going after a degree. A large amount of military trainging and courses can be converted into college credit, although not all can be used to get the degree, a good number will be used.

Since I am Navy I am including links to the Navy college programs, as well as the MGIB info. Hope this helps you out. What ever you and your son decide, good luck.
In addition to more conventional means (service academies, ROTC and the GI Bill), he could (as someone has already said) enlist and obtain his degree while on active duty. This can be done in any number of ways - night school, for one, and there are lots of accredited colleges and universities that offer degrees largely (or even completely) through correspondence courses. It might take longer, and he'll have to be very careful switching between institutions (credits don't always transfer), but it can be done.

In rare cases, an outstanding enlisted man/woman can be "earmarked" for promotion into the officer corps, in which case the service would pay for him to go to college - while he was on active duty. However, there are no guarantees that your son will be selected for such a program, no matter what nonsense the recruiters might be telling him.

He also could go to college on his own (before signing up or after a term of enlisted service), and apply for a direct commission after graduation. This is a FAR different from enlisting (with a college degree), and THEN applying for a commission, which again is not guaranteed. What's the best way to join the military and still have a college degree?Im a junior in high school graduating w/ Core 40 w/ Technical Honors. This year I went through a program at a neighboring school that gave me 15 credits towards an associates degree in Criminal Justice. Im enlisting in the Marnes as an MP and getting the rest of my degree online. So if I go to get a civillian job later on, Ill have both experience and a degree.

    He has a few choices...

-Serve his time, use the GI Bill after (What you were talking about w/ the Militayr paying for college after)

-ROTC (Where he trains to be an officer while going through a normal college life and serves a required 4 years after school, more if he wishes)

-Get a degree while in the Military, which would be hard if it was a BA w/ something that involved very specific classes. What's the best way to join the military and still have a college degree?
I am in the reserves and in college at the same time. Right now I am deployed. You join the military you have a obligation to the country and the US president before your education. Once your deployed there are ways that you can continue with your education. To the person who said your friend went back to college with a missing leg, you have more chance dying on the way to college than in iraq.
Go talk to a recruiter. Just check the phone book they are all over the country. With some situations your son can go to college and then go into the military as an officer. Others do the service first and college later. (btw despite the previous responder many servicemen never see the middle east and are serving state side.

The average amount of civlians that die with or without a war is 155,000 a day. Most of these people die without the media even acknowledging they existed at all in homes and isolated parts of the world.

When I look at all the ways to die I would rather die for a cause, doing what I believed was helping free a nation of tyranny, than for no reason at all. )What's the best way to join the military and still have a college degree?
If your in the US then there is the academy's, Navy, Army or Air-force. Your grades and desires have to be there, but they are great places for education in general (most companies prefer Military school grads due to the strict focused education.). ROTC at the school is another good thing to look at.
Westpoint, The Citadel, Virginia Military Institute (VMI), Norwich University.... a few others...
    Dear Sir or Madam,

I am an 8 year Army veteran and I actually did what your son would like to do. It is certainly possible, so let me give you the best advice I possibly can.

First, do not let your son join in a combat arms MOS (military occupational specialty). I myself was MOS 11B, which is light infantry and I decided to go through Airborne and Ranger School, so I guess I took the hard route. :) The reason I say this is because it is hard to go to school at night and be deployed at the same time.

Secondly, depending on your sons interests, the Air Force might actually be the best bet. I have a couple of friends with masters degrees right now...fully paid for by the US Government. He is an engineer that develops tracking systems for smart bombs....this is highly transferrable to the civilian sector and once he separates he can find a job easily. Myself, I had one of two choices. Police Officer or Assassin. LoL.

Lastly, tell him to save as much money as possible and take advantage of the GI Bill ASAP. It's easy to get into a rut and get lazy....he needs to do this immediately upon his eligibility being met.

I hope this helps. Email me if you need anything else. :)

    Jim
Depending on his testing scores, he will choose what he wants to do in the military. It is not just people shooting guns, military men include health care workers, social workers, cooks, transportation, etc. The testing scores narrow the scope of what area he can choose, and after basic training, he would go to AIT, which trains him for the field that he chooses. There is a process through which AIT classes can be transferred into college credit. For example, if he is able to be an X-ray tech, just the military training alone will allow him to take the registry examination and get certified to do it in the outside world. In addition, if he wishes, he could get his AIT training transferred into an Associates degree in radiation technology. Other college coursework can be taken while on active duties, and most commanders encourage it. He could take classes online or at night. As an active duty serviceman, he would be eligible for the GI Bill to pay for his college. Good luck to him!
Both are possibilities. I would suggest you guys would benefit by looking into ROTC programs. Depending on the service branch he likes, finding a college that offers the desired ROTC program might be a good fit. The Citadel (South Carolina) and VMI (Virginia) both offer all the ROTC programs, Navy(Marine), Army, and Air Force. ROTC scholarships are available. If he should go the enlistment route, there are fairly generous college funds to be had.

In general, all the services require a BA degree for Officers. ROTC is the best way to get the degree and the commission. The US service academies are excellent, but extremely difficult to get in. They offer free school and all, but only a few applicants get in.
First start with the facts sweety. Right now his chances of joining the military and coming home are slim to be frank with you. Send your baby to college and if he wants to join up later than tell him he can. Right now I have a few friends who joined for college .. yes they are getting their education. But first they had to fight in Iraq one whom came back minus a leg

I will tell my kids stay home I will support you get a part time job apply for every grant there is and dont join the military to scary and unstable right now. even for those who just want to take advantage of the educational facter. It's a judgment call only the two of you can decide. Just keep the blinders off you and your child. peace to you and yours.

How many cars will the military pay to ship overseas during a PCS?

When we traveled to Hawaii in '01, the military would ship only one vehicle at their cost -- so we left our second car here in the states. My husband has been temporarily retired for 3 1/2 years and is likely to return to active duty before the year is out. At the time of his retirement, there was "talk" of the military allowing two vehicles to be shipped at their cost. Is that now the case? How many cars will the military pay to ship overseas during a PCS?Take one apart and put it in boxes marked "Kitchen stuff".....How many cars will the military pay to ship overseas during a PCS?
It is still only one....we just moved to Alaska so we sold our clunker back in New York. They will only pay for one. If you can find a really good buddy that's heading for the same place and he doesn't have a vehicle...you might have to temporarily title the vehicle under his name and then transfer it back once the vehicle gets to Hawaii. My Dad did that when we went overseas to Panama. If you do have to retitle, you'll need legal proof that you made the temporary switch and that the vehicle is rightfully yours, etc. so there aren't any surprises down the road! Hope that helps. How many cars will the military pay to ship overseas during a PCS?i know a military family who moved out of U.S. at the end of last year, they could only take one car then. Only one we just moved to England from the states and they only move one for free if you want to move another its your money.

What kind of trouble could military personel get into for having an affair?

Just wondering what kind of action would be taken against someone whos in the military that had an affair?...my husband is in the military and so is the girl he cheated with...so could they get demoted? or ucmj action taken against them? what would be the consequences? What kind of trouble could military personel get into for having an affair?I don't think there will be any action..What kind of trouble could military personel get into for having an affair?
YOur cheating husband is full of it. Any military member who commits adultry can be held by UCMJ..he can get demoted, etc. He cannot with hold child support since this is directed by civilian courts. If he were to stay in the military he must give you BAH (housing allowance due his rank). Call his commander and tell him what has went on. I will say that unless you have some type of proof or a confession he can deny it. Of course if he does i'd divorce his butt and take 50% of his retirement (if he retires) and you will get child support (a quantity of his BAH)....all the rules of UCMJ can be found in the Manual of Courts Martial-which every Commander and First Sergeant has a copy and you can also call the base JAG office or provost marshall (one in the same). Good Luck and take no crapWhat kind of trouble could military personel get into for having an affair?I was in the U.S. Army for four years. More than likely nothing is going to happen to him or her. If you make a big stink about it there may be an investigation. It also depends on his chain of command. I knew so many people in the military who commited adultry and nothing ever happened to them. Usually the First Sergeant turns their back on the situation and ignores it, as does the Company commander. They don't like to get involved. I've even known gals who get pregnant by married men in their unit and nothing happends. Doesn't mean it won't in this situation. You mentioned your husband said you won't get child support if he gets demoted. This is simply not true. You are going to get child support no matter what! I'd just leave him...you'll be better off without this cheater and liar in your life. Best Wishes in the future.
Kdl and Burn are pretty much right.

You WILL still get child support. But if he cannot advance due to the UCMJ, you might never get *that* much.

Yes, if he cheated he was wrong morally. It might sound like a great idea to 'get him' thru his job, however don't let his stupidity effect his career. If he was at IBM, this wouldn't even be an issue....

If you want to get him - the best way is to move on with your life and be happier without him. I've BTDT - my ex isn't military, my hubby now is....but I'd never turn him over to UCMJ if he cheated. Just something about that turns my stomach a little. What kind of trouble could military personel get into for having an affair?adultry is NOT prosecuted under the UCMJ UNLESS it is in conjunction with another charge. For instance, if your spouse and the girl he had the affair with are in the same chain of command, that is Fraternization and can be prosecuted under the UCMJ becuase it directly affected the Command and it's mission. But if she was in a different Command, tyhey p[robably won;t do anything unless they can prove he snuck out during a watch to go see her.

IF he is brought forth on charges, he CAN lose a pay grade, half months pay for 1-3 months and be confined to quarters. so yes, it can have a serious financial impact , becuase if he gets demoted, his pay goes down accordingly.

so be very very careful of the revenge you seek. Far better to just get a good lawyer and secure Child support and Medical for the kids. What kind of trouble could military personel get into for having an affair?
First, it is a violation of Art 134, UCMJ, to commit adultery. This is punishable UP TO, Dishonorable Discharge/Bad Conduct Discharge, up to one (1) year confinement, and total forfeiture of pay and allowances.

Two, it's extremely hard to prove adultery. Either one of the partys has to admit to the offense, or other proof SHOWING the act, have to be presented. If neither of these things happen, then there is no proof. If there is no proof, there is no crime. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

Three, even if the proof was presented, and it was definate, it is unlikely that anything would happen because of this offense. At the most, he may receive an Art 15, but that would be it.

Four, he has no say in the matter concerning child support AS LONG AS HE IS IN THE MILITARY. Once a judge decrees that he will pay, then the documents will be forwarded to Dept of the Army, and Dept of Fianance and Accouting, and an the money will be automatically deducted and sent to your bank account. The only way that can be stopped is by another court order. Once he gets out of the military, however, you may be hard pressed to get the money.
They can get reprimanded, demoted with money taken from their paychecks or even court marshalled. It just depends on their XO.What kind of trouble could military personel get into for having an affair?
It was unfortunate incident that happened, however while everyone is correct it is against the UCMJ to commit adultery. Most branches will not really do anything unless the people are "caught in the act of adultery". They could still have an investigation, but as for trouble, i.e paperwork, losing rank, etc, they usually have to be caught. Its stupid, but thats how it is.
It is an Infraction of UCMJ law. All UCMJ Laws carry the same maximum punishment of death.

Obviously that won't happen to him.

I don't know exactly what would happen. But it is a UCMJ Infraction.

What he's saying is true. He loses money, you lose child support. You will get something though, they till take it from his ***. My best advice would just to be to Divorce him. Don't take UCMJ Action. I have no tolerance for people who cheat, I won't let all the secrets I know about people out, but if their wives find out I have no sympathy for them.

But still, taking UCMJ Action would just be morally wrong, imho.

    -------------------------

    Of course cheating is wrong.

But does anyone really deserve their entire lives to be ruined because of one incident (the whole thing being an incident), everyone does wrong things. He shouldn't have to pay for it until he dies.

Believe me, he should be beat to within an inch of his life. But, with that he will heal, just as you will one day heal from being hurt.. This is something that doesn't heal.

Taking UCMJ Action is no game. It will be with him forever. If he planned on making a career out of the military, he will probably never make it above E-6. If he's an Officer then he is just totally screwed. He'll get knocked down and probably never make another rank again. It will also follow him into the civilian world if he gets out.
It depends on the command if they will get into trouble. As for the child support; he will have to pay!! It will come directly out of his pay. There is a cap on how much he can pay (not sure how much) but you definetly will get it!!! It doesn't matter who is at fault. The money is for the child and if you get custody, he will have to pay it!!! Good luck and divorce the Bastard!!

    P. S. I have been a military wife for 11 years.
Well first of all I am sorry this happened to you... They can both get into a lot of trouble for their affair. They can get an Article 15, a loss in rank and pay and will be put on probation, where they are just 'in trouble' basically. The military does not take things of that nature lightly...
He could get demoted but it is more likely that he will get extra duty or a severe chewing out from his superior. I wouldn't let him scare you into thinking you are not going to get child support. Sounds like he is trying to strong arm you into doing what he wants you to do. Sounds like he is scared. Good luck!
Ask his company commander to throw the book at him! You would right to do so! If he can't keep it in his pants then he better stop wearing the uniform! If his CO refuses go to the press, and his commander as well. Keep going up the line until you get results! They don't want his kind in the service!
,If one is enlisted and the other an officer, it could ruin their careers, But then again, if that's what they did to you, they deserve it. You will still get child support since him being demoted has nothing to do with that. It all boils down to the people in his command structure. I've seen commanders with the attitude "what they do on their time is their business" and others who feel " Its against policy so I'm going to fry em", hopefully, your soon-to-be-ex has the "fry em" type of leaders in his command. As far as I'm concerned, make the loser pay, pay, pay for doing this to you. For him to do that while you are caring for his children while worrying about him in a combat zone is beyond crappy! You deserve better than him and I'm sure you will one day be happier than H.E.L.L that you divorced his sorry A.S.S and met a great guy who will stick to you like glue. Good Luck!
My world is correct - even if it were proven, most likely nothing would be done. Unless it's an officer-enlisted affair or a staff NCO-lower rank enlisted affair. I knew a First Sergeant once who took his girlfriend to an Army ball and showed her off to his troops and the brass! Did he think everyone would forget he was married?

Even in a case as flagrant as this, nothing was done until he committed another unrelated UCMJ violation several months later. Then they "suggested" he retire. He did.

I realize this isn't really what you want to hear. But unless there is a large disparity in rank between the two having the affair, the only thing you'll definitely accomplish by pursuing this is to make him angry enough to fight you in everything. Fight = $$$$ out of your pocket and not necessarily much in return.

    Good luck!
The military doesn't take such cases lightly (depending on the command who will try to cover him but if you press forward with it then they don't have much say so from cases I've seen) and the military law usually always sides on behalf of the wife. Depending his rank, most likely get a NJP (non judical punishment or as they say, going to see the old man), possibly get demoted in rank because cheating is covered in the UCMJ and also fraterization may be part of the case depending on rank between the two and if they work together. One you still be looked after especially if you have a child together. Best advice is to go to the base legal services and talk to someone there to see what advice they can give you.

Okay and having a kid with him, you can get two-thirds of his paycheck after you divorce him. So trust me on this one, you would be receiving child support automatically allotted to you but would lose your base privilages except when escorting your child on.
Yes, he can get into serious trouble and so can she depending on their chain of command and the actions their superiors choose to take. As far as child support, unless he gets kicked out you can count on your child support. His paycheck would include an extra amount (albeit small) just for having dependents. I say, go get him (AND HER).
1st things 1st, I am sorry this happened to you! Now For the fun stuff. UCMJ is no joke. If you go for it, Just know you will lose him so be sure this is over before talking to anyone on base! I have BTDT with fleet and family ask a simple question, get a seriously weird answer and investigating. You will recieve money for your children, don't let that be the reason you stay, as long as he is in the military he MUST pay you. I'd say take the jerk down and watch his world fall around him. If you chose to go to your family services and talk to some about your options. Now for the girl he cheated with if she is in command or his officer she will also be in trouble. Good luck.
This is not true. Cheating in a marriage is ADULTRY! If you charge him with that, it's a felony and he will be the one not getting s***!

What will happen to the military with Obama?

I already disapprove of Obama, but im just curious what noticeable changes will occur to the US Military with him in charge in terms of budget and supplies? I already know what hes doing with military operations. What will happen to the military with Obama?Ygg and heart of darkness are right. Obama cannot cut the military budget, its something only congress can do.... which has already been controlled by the democrats for the last 4 years. Not much will change military wise and the closing of Gitmo is probably the smartest thing diplomatically Obama could have done.

oh ya, and Cordelian is right, you are that coward that just wanted a free check from the military without doing any fighting yourself. What will happen to the military with Obama?
I'm not sure what will happen to the military with Obama as President, but I think it's safe to say that he won't send them on some BS invasion and occupation that results in thousands of American military personnel killed and tens of thousands wounded, in addition to the killed and wounded Iraqi civilians and the damage to their infrastructure.

Not to mention the trillion+ dollars it cost the US taxpayers and the demoralizing effect it's had on US service members, in addition to the loosing ground in the legitimate conflict going on in Afghanistan.

The list goes on, but I'm sure you get the idea...Obama couldn't do much worse than President Cheney and Bush Jr.What will happen to the military with Obama?I am so sick of the Obama whiners. Obama is not going to disband the military. This country is in a deep deep economic crisis triggered by badly managed bank activity. However, our financial problems have been building since the Reagan days.

You CANNOT have a strong military if you have a weak economy. Not over the long haul. So we better fix the economy or get ready to play 2nd fiddle or 3rd fiddle in the military arena as well.,
The military budget will be Obama's spoiled brat trust fund, just like under Clinton, especially considering IT IS the Clinton Administration in charge. Budgets and benefits will be cut, weapons programs eliminated, and social engineering to frost the crap cake.

Look for a draft if soldiers start leaving en masse. Think they'll make a sequel to "Stop Loss" criticizing Barry? What will happen to the military with Obama?Obama is going to basically take a crap on the military ... honestly he plans on cutting military spending by 25%, he will pull troops out of Iraq and add new American soldiers in Afghanistan! And, because he is the Messiah, he won't need to listen to our generals for advice because he already knows everything. What will happen to the military with Obama?
    A) you dont understand your own government structucture

B)Gitmo was breaking the Geneva Convention or is at least acccused of it and is being investigated

C)He is trying to get our mind off terrorists so they cant be used as an excuse to make uneccessary military actions in the middle east(but not all are unneccessary) its kindov like a third person intruding into an argument and saying "Just Drop It!!!!!!"

Its hilarious that republicans are freaking out saying obama is going to ruin everything when everything already has been ruined by 8 years of republican majority in washington
I feel sorry for our Warriors. They have sworn an oath to protect the constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic. The biggest treat to our constitution is the guy who wants the "Fairness" doctrine and has promised gun control. Our troops risked their lives capturing the murdering coward jihadists, and Obama shuts the prison down using an Executive Order because he knows rational people will not agree to aiding the enemy.

Our warriors are in a tough position because if they support Obama they are breaking their oath. What will happen to the military with Obama?
I think a lot of very good people will leave the military as soon as they are able, just like a lot of very good people left when Clinton was president. I believe Obama intends to cut the heart out of our military, while creating a "civilian defense force" (as in Mao's Red Brigades) to "re-educate" US citizens.
He's kept Robert Gates on as Secretary of Defense which is a smart move on his part.

He's looking at cutting the defense budget by 10% according to Fox News...I'm not sure where Ashley is getting 25%. In this economy, everybody needs to tighten his or her belt. We are in this together.

EDIT: Aren't you the guy that was looking for an MOS that didn't deploy?http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;鈥?/a>
There will be a lot more caualties in Afghanastan %26amp; Pakistan that the lives %26amp; limbs lost in Iraq. The only hope we have now is Petraus who H. Clinton and the ultra libs ridiculed him!

Obama is clueless and Clinton has no respect for the military. Where does this leave us? Not very encouraging.
I actually have a feeling that people will start volunteering for the military more than they have in awhile. I hardly doubt he will be taking anything from it, any person with that level of intelligence knows, that improving our military right now is as important as fixing the economy. Also, the budget is Congress's responsibility.
This was miss Clinton's biggest point, he seems to want to entirely forget about the military in sense you mention. The way i saw it was that he wants to sweep everything that made bush disliked under the carpet %26amp; forget about it till he's out of office or needs it.
The military is going to be emasculated.

I hope Obama fails soon and badly, so that he can't get any more of his loser liberal policies in place. We are already going to have to pay for centuries for this big Democrat spending orgy.
It will go on, largely unchanged. BTW, budget is controlled by the Congress.

...and, you have absolutely no idea what he is doing with military operations.

BTW, the first downsizing of the military was performed during the Eisenhower Administration. You do remember Eisenhower, don't you? He was the guy who coined the term, "Military-Industrial Complex." The next person to dump on the military was Mr. Reagan. I am sorry to trouble you with facts.

EDIT: Don't ask "questions" that you have obviously already made your mind up about. That is the difference between a question and a political rant...and an ignorant political rant at that!

2nd EDIT: You said, "The dropping of charges against Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri who bombed the USS Cole..." Having those charges dropped is NOT the same as releasing him from custody.
They will be forced to dis arm and change the uniform to rainbow colors and flip flops oh and to drive slug bugs yellow at that.
The military will be well armed with purses really big heavy purses.
They be slowly downsized as Obama's National Police is created.
Can't say. He hasn't been in office that long.
    It scares me to think..
i think it will be very scary and very bad
From what I hear with his plans to cut the Defense Budget we will have almost all Black NCOs and openly gay troops. So as I see it when war comes we will arm our troops with the shovels and rakes they used to fix roads with. Our battle plans will be formulated by "rappers" and "sex deviates".

  • If you are sexually assaulted in the military can you pursue charges outside of the military?

When I was in the military I was sexually assaulted, reported it, was released for the military (not becuase of the assault), and was still working with the military to pursue with charges but when I was to testify the military contacted me to tell me that they were not going to go through with the court marshell and was just going to release him from the military. Am I able to persue charges outside of the military? It never went to court or anything like that. This has really effected me and I feel that I need to see closer on this matter. Thank you.If you are sexually assaulted in the military can you pursue charges outside of the military? You could certainly sue the offender. As far as bringing a criminal case, that would depend on whether any civil government entity has jurisdiction and whether the circumstances of the assault even make it possible to prosecute. Sadly, there are times when you KNOW a crime was committed but the evidence just isn't strong enough to prove it in court.

Your best bet would probably be to consult a lawyer and get some truly qualified advice.

Also see a VA rep. You should be entitled to counseling services at the very least.

What is the military service in South Korea like?

Okie I am from Singapore so the only thing I know about complusory military service is limited to what I gather from Singapore.

In Singapore (correct me if I am wrong) guys serving military service get to go home on the weekends after their 1st 2 weeks and after the 1st 3 months they get to go back home everyday.

Does Korea military service function the same way? Do they even get to go home during their military service? And if they do how long do they usually need to serve before they are allow to leave camp? What is the military service in South Korea like?I think there are mainly two types of compulsory military service in Korea.

    1. ?? (for guys with "not too serious" physical problem) - you don't stay at the base. You do some service work and a little military training

    2. ?? (for healthy guys) - you stay at the base for two years. Their parents or other family members support them financially.

You get paid about 50 to 90 dollars a month for two years. So you can't make a living while you serve.

How does voting work if your deployed for the military?

I can only imagine that people in Iraq can vote and the long term people stationed in South Korea, etc but I want to confirm this鈥?Because they may have a permanent residence on the military base are they able to vote in primaries or have any effect on the caucuses at all? What about the general election?

Is it illegal for a military airmen to charge his dependents rent to live in military family housing?

I live in Guam on Andersen A.F.B. and I am being charged by my mother and step-father (the active duty sponsor) rent to live in the house. Is this allowed by military family housing guidelines or is it otherwise illegal? Is it illegal for a military airmen to charge his dependents rent to live in military family housing?not it is not illegal. in fact if you are not a full time student(high school or college) , you are ineligible to live in MFH at all and can be kicked out by housing. Is it illegal for a military airmen to charge his dependents rent to live in military family housing?
It is illegal. As a sponsor, your responsibility is to support your dependents. The military pays higher housing allowance to the service member according to the number of dependents in the household.

Here is a situation which one of my soldiers encountered while stationed in Germany...

Soldiers wife decides to move back to the US. (couldn't stand living in a foreign country) The soldier was required to continue making payments on housing in Germany, and was also required to pay (provide) housing to the spouse who was now living back in the US. Had he not done so, the spouse would have the right to go to any military base and complain that her service member husband was not supporting her. The military would go ahead and automatically debit his pay each month that would go straight into her bank account.

So the answer to your question is this. No, it is not legal for him to charge you rent. As long as you are a dependent, he is required to support you. Not the other way around.

If you complain and a military authority questions your step father, he can always lie and say that he does not charge you rent. But, if you have some sort of paper trail such as a check stub which clearly has "rent" on the memo portion, then you can provide that to the authorities as proof that he is charging you rent. (I do not recommend stabbing your step father in the back like that).

It sounds as though your parents are trying to teach you a valuable lesson in money management. I do not know how old you are, but in some cases where the dependent is 16 years or under, this can be a difficult lesson to bare. I suggest that you sit down and have an adult conversation with your family and describe your objections.

Good luck!Is it illegal for a military airmen to charge his dependents rent to live in military family housing? The only people I ever met whose parents made pay rent were people who should have already been moved out and were mooching. If that sounds like you, give it up. If you're old enough to work, you're old enough to get your own place or start paying rent. If not, I don't see how they could expext you to come up with rent.Is it illegal for a military airmen to charge his dependents rent to live in military family housing?
it's neither legal or illegal...if you don't want your parents to charge you rent, move out...it's their home as long as they occupy it.Is it illegal for a military airmen to charge his dependents rent to live in military family housing? It is illegal. Please see the housing office as soon as possible. Is it illegal for a military airmen to charge his dependents rent to live in military family housing?

I am thinking about joining the military but wondering if there are any groups for husbands (non-military) with wives that are in the military. I know that there are a lot for military wives but nothing I can find for the other way around.

Thanks! Are there any groups for husbands with wives in the Military?technically their spouse groups not wives groups

but there are very few husbandsAre there any groups for husbands with wives in the Military?there are support groups that for military spouses that consist of husband's and wives. They are more like a networking group and can be found if you google "military support groups". There are a ton out there. If you join the military and deploy, his unit should also have a family readiness advisor that organizes and coordinates events for the spouses of the deployed soldiers.

What kind of effect do you think a military life has on a child?

I prefer that civilians answer this questions if they don't know anyone in the military. This is for my term paper, and I need to know the thoughts of civilians on how they think military dependents are raised.

----- I'm writing an argument paper. Born and raised in the military life, I already have enough experience to write about my life as a dependent. I need opinions from the civilian POV (either good or bad) so that I can write about their standpoint. Please, this is an argument paper. I was ready to tell you about my son, who was born and raised by TWO military parents (talk about your double jeopardy!).

Good luck on your paper....and if you really are a military dependent, you won't mind my calling you a Brat. ;-)What kind of effect do you think a military life has on a child?Military life takes a lot out of a person wheter he/she can't see her family OR he/she can't enjoy life..eaither ways or both military is not for the weak-hearted..as far as i know military life is harsh

take for example ur a baby andur father is a soldier, your mother is a policewoman

chances are they'll discipline you eventhough your'e a little baby

The military has a heart too...they are loyal and never leaves anyone behind

Well 2nd part of if u were raised in military life

if ur a toddler and if u mess up the house a bit they'll discipline you..

if ur a teen and get so loud..they'll ground u...What kind of effect do you think a military life has on a child?
OH! This makes sense now... got it!

Good luck with your paper. I live in the "land of fruits and nuts," so the local belief system about military life isn't all that great... In spite of evidence to the contrary..

What does the 21 gunshot salute mean, in a military funeral?

I was watching the funeral of Gerald Ford. They did the 21 gunshot salute. I was wondering what it means the 21? Any military men out there? What does the 21 gunshot salute mean, in a military funeral? It isn't 21 gunshot salute. It's a 3-volley salute that's performed at military and police funerals as part of the drill and ceremony of the Honor Guard. 3-volley salute is not to be confused with the 21-gun salute (or even lesser gun salutes, such as 19-gun or 17-gun, etc) which use cannon.

A president, past or present will receive a 21-gun salute. On the day of the funeral he will receive a 21-minute gun salute starting at noon. They will also fire a 50-gun salute (representing each state) that will follow the lowering of the flag.

In the Anglo-Saxon Empire, seven guns was a recognized naval salute, seven being the standard number of weapons on a vessel. Because more gunpowder could be stored on dry land, forts could fire three rounds for every one fired from sea, hence the number 21. With the improvement of naval gunpowder, honors rendered at sea were increased to 21 as well.

Also 21 is not from the sum of 1776. http://www.snopes.com/military/21gun.htmWhat does the 21 gunshot salute mean, in a military funeral?
The 21 gun salute is an honor given to a President during his funeral, arrival and departure. It is a tradition always given to a President on important occasions. What does the 21 gunshot salute mean, in a military funeral?I'm glad someone already got it out there that the salute for the POTUS funeral was the 3-volley Salute. It is used for this occasion, as well as all military funerals.

The adding of the numbers making the year 1776 is an urban legend. Though popular, it is not the reason for 21 shots. Many say that the use of 7 rifles has religious meanings, as well as the fact that they are fired 3 times.

The 21 Gun salute is used for occasions as the POTUS leaving office, and it uses 21 canons, firing one shot each. There are other salutes, including a 50 gun salute at noon on the Fourth of July. Wikipedia has good information about salutes.

The origin behind the salute is believed to come from ancient times where people would show respect for the fallen by placing their weapons in a position of ineffectiveness. Many African cultures would place the tips of their spears, and other weapons, in the dirt.

At some point, the nature of the salute, and the number of shots fired came to be 21 shots in the 3-volley salute you see at funerals today. What does the 21 gunshot salute mean, in a military funeral?
it is in honour of a famous or powerfull departed

or a hero. What does the 21 gunshot salute mean, in a military funeral?Add up the numbers of 1,7,7, and 6 from the year 1776. This is where the 21 gun salute came from,What does the 21 gunshot salute mean, in a military funeral?
This is what the Army's website says:

The use of gun salutes for military occasions is traced to early warriors who demonstrated their peaceful intentions by placing their weapons in a position that rendered them ineffective. Apparently this custom was universal, with the specific act varying with time and place, depending on the weapons being used. A North African tribe, for example, trailed the points of their spears on the ground to indicate that they did not mean to be hostile.

The tradition of rendering a salute by cannon originated in the 14th century as firearms and cannons came into use. Since these early devices contained only one projectile, discharging them once rendered them ineffective. Originally warships fired seven-gun salutes--the number seven probably selected because of its astrological and Biblical significance. Seven planets had been identified and the phases of the moon changed every seven days. The Bible states that God rested on the seventh day after Creation, that every seventh year was sabbatical and that the seven times seventh year ushered in the Jubilee year.

Land batteries, having a greater supply of gunpowder, were able to fire three guns for every shot fired afloat, hence the salute by shore batteries was 21 guns. The multiple of three probably was chosen because of the mystical significance of the number three in many ancient civilizations. Early gunpowder, composed mainly of sodium nitrate, spoiled easily at sea, but could be kept cooler and drier in land magazines. When potassium nitrate improved the quality of gunpowder, ships at sea adopted the salute of 21 guns.

The 21-gun salute became the highest honor a nation rendered. Varying customs among the maritime powers led to confusion in saluting and return of salutes. Great Britain, the world's preeminent seapower in the 18th and 19th centuries, compelled weaker nations to salute first, and for a time monarchies received more guns than did republics. Eventually, by agreement, the international salute was established at 21 guns, although the United States did not agree on this procedure until August 1875.

The gun salute system of the United States has changed considerably over the years. In 1810, the "national salute" was defined by the War Department as equal to the number of states in the Union--at that time 17. This salute was fired by all U.S. military installations at 1:00 p.m. (later at noon) on Independence Day. The President also received a salute equal to the number of states whenever he visited a military installation.

In 1842, the Presidential salute was formally established at 21 guns. In 1890, regulations designated the "national salute" as 21 guns and redesignated the traditional Independence Day salute, the "Salute to the Union," equal to the number of states. Fifty guns are also fired on all military installations equipped to do so at the close of the day of the funeral of a President, ex-President, or President-elect.

Today the national salute of 21 guns is fired in honor of a national flag, the sovereign or chief of state of a foreign nation, a member of a reigning royal family, and the President, ex-President and President-elect of the United States. It is also fired at noon of the day of the funeral of a President, ex-President, or President-elect.

Gun salutes are also rendered to other military and civilian leaders of this and other nations. The number of guns is based on their protocol rank. These salutes are always in odd numbers.

Source: Headquarters, Military District of Washington, FACT SHEET: GUN SALUTES, May 1969.

I noticed that when President Ford's body arrived at Andrews Air Force Base today that he was given a 21-gun salute which looked to be given by 3 cannons. There was a forth cannon but I did not see it fire but then the TV camera's view was limited.

How can I make the military ball appeal more to lower enlisted Soldiers?

I've been selected to serve on the military ball committee and our goal this year is to draw in about 800-1000 people. The problem is that most of the time only officers and retired officers ever show up to the military ball. Besides lowering ticket costs for the lower enlisted, which we are already working on, what else would make it appealing to the vast bulk of the Army that is the lower enlisted?

PS I already tried suggesting an under the sea theme, it didnt fly with the General. How can I make the military ball appeal more to lower enlisted Soldiers?talk to the ladies of your FRG ask them to disemante the information to the wives and set up a day they could go shopping for their gowns, trust me as a n army wife when you here you get to dress up in a gown like that all of the wives push to attened its an ecuse to look beautiful one day out of the year. Also try handing out any awards due this will get the soldiers whom are recieving the awards to attend. And lastly I am not sure how the guard works because we are active, but or Officers have been know to assign those saying they wish not to attend to be dd's and take home the ones who have had too much to drink they usully change their mindsHow can I make the military ball appeal more to lower enlisted Soldiers?
Provide Body ArmorHow can I make the military ball appeal more to lower enlisted Soldiers?Soldiers have to pay to get into a Military Ball? Wow we really do support our troops.............
    Thai hookers

    I'm just kidding!

Perhaps there is a small college or something nearby where you could invite young ladies to attend. How can I make the military ball appeal more to lower enlisted Soldiers?Advertise using fliers all around the barracks %26amp; places of work where the enlisted soldiers are.How can I make the military ball appeal more to lower enlisted Soldiers?
You will probably attract some younger, and possibly older NCO's, but I wouldn't expect a high turnout from the younger enlisted. Most are unfamiliar with protocol, and would also feel uncomfortable with the brass hanging around. For them, it would be a waste of time.

The NCO's on the other hand, who have decided about making the military a career, would be more likely to consider a formal function, such as a military ball.

In order to get the others interested, I would start with baby steps, and get them introduced to such events, like a dining in or out. Have the NCO's get involved in helping the younger enlisted understand why it would be good for them to go.

Naturally, as you already mentioned, costs can be prohibitive, and some may not have a date to go with, etc.
open bar or cheap drinks -- advertise it and they will come - thats what they likeHow can I make the military ball appeal more to lower enlisted Soldiers?
This is the military. Order them to show up.

What you are missing here is not only the price of admission but the price of a dress uniform, the code of military conduct, and the extreme difference in age between enlisted men and the officers. Anyone of those three would be reason enough not to show up unless they were ordered to do so, but; they can be.

Perhaps your goal is simply unrealistic, or you are limiting yourself to only soldiers. Officers have family and friends they should be allowed to invite. That would boost your attendance some.

Also, who says they can dance? Did any of you ever look into training them to do so? That also may be part of your problem.

But, I would say most of your problem has to do with the fact that officers and enlisted men are not meant to fraternise, so partying with one another is a bad idea.
As sad as it may seem. Try to provide some sort of incentive for going. Talk to all of the units to give all attendees a 3 day pass or something. All it takes is one ball for them to decide whether or not they will go to another one in the future.

Most are unaware of what actually happens at a ball, from the receiving line, to the grog, to the open bar. Most think it is extremely proper and don't want to put themselves out there for that kind of stuff.

These days, incentives are almost needed.
promote it as a good way for their wifes and girlfriends to meet each other, also have a couple of different bands that suit the young and older guests.

As for the General suggest for it to work it has to appeal to the lower ranks
You are a National Guard unit..meaning you are part timers(in a sense). I bet half of the Junior enlisted folks don't even have a properly fitting set of Dress uniform(Class As I think you call them?)

Unless you have one HUGE NG unit, I can't see getting that many bodies.. hell, Aircraft Carriers with crews of 3500 MIGHT draw 1000 bodies to the Navy Ball.

Plain fact is.. this sort of thing just isn't all that exciting for Junior enblisted folks. Unless you managed to get some seriously sweet door prizes donated, I doubt that you will have much luck.

That sort of thing is mainly for Senior enlisted and O's to hobnob and work the room.
I can see why they've selected you to serve on the committee. You obviously live in the same world as they do. I assume that while you are worried about selling tickets to the "lower enlisted" it is the "lower enlisted" who dying in Iraq.

How can you expect enlisted men/women to give anyone like you any respect when you give them none.

To put it into my perspective, I served 16 years in the Royal Air Force and if anyone had ever called a "lower" anything I would have happily assaulted them and accepted a discharge.

Maybe you should leave and join a big corporation as there would probably be more opportunity to suck up to people.

What happens if somebody signs you up for the military without your consent?

You know that Family Guy episode where Stewie sings him and Brian up for the Marines? What actually happens if somebody signs you up for the military without you knowing or consenting to it? Can you get out, or are you doomed to two years in the service? What happens if somebody signs you up for the military without your consent?i am pretty sure that that is not possibleWhat happens if somebody signs you up for the military without your consent?
there is so much red tape they can't do it has to be you. What happens if somebody signs you up for the military without your consent? That can't really happen. The Military needs your written consent to enlist you. What happens if somebody signs you up for the military without your consent?
This can't happen. No one can "sign someone up" for the military. It's not a mailing list. What happens if somebody signs you up for the military without your consent?Impossible.

In order to be eligible you would have to physically go and have a medical exam. There is no way another person could pretend to be you for both MEPS visits, the ASVAB test, the fingerprinting, and the contract signing...it's just not possibleWhat happens if somebody signs you up for the military without your consent?
    Impossible.

I think my 6 year old son will grow up to join the military when he turns 18 because on his father's side they have multi-generations who serve in the military. How do I prepare my son for life in the military when he turns 18? I already have him enrolled in swim class. Should I do boy scouts too?How do I prepare my son for the military?Prepare your son for life so that he will be a happy, well adjusted, well educated young man and he will decide what path to take. You can no more decide your son's future than your parents could have decided yours. He will see over time the respect that a military career generates in his dad's family. Whether that influences his decision or not will depend on him. Don't push him .... that can cause all kinds of problems.

How do I prepare my son for the military?

I think my 6 year old son will grow up to join the military when he turns 18 because on his father's side they have multi-generations who serve in the military. How do I prepare my son for life in the military when he turns 18? I already have him enrolled in swim class. Should I do boy scouts too?How do I prepare my son for the military?Don't listen to Jammin'. There are just some people who don't realize the honor behind the United States Military and what they have done to to even give him that right to say.

As you already know, the military may not be for everyone. It is a big responsibility, but it is rewarding

Most important thing to do is keep him active, and disciplined. Not only will it be easier on him, but he will turn out to be an all around better gentleman in the future.

Swim is good. What my brother regrets is that he didn't swim much as a kid (and he is in the Navy haha)

Boy Scouts is good because he starts to get a general idea of a basic Chain of Command, the hierarchical structure of authority. For sure put him into Cub Scouts which is from 7 years old to 12 years old. With Boy Scouts, he will do a lot of Community service, boosting his skill in communication (but I'm not going to lie, he will meet a lot of socially awkward scouts there[more dorky than anything].)

Get him into a martial art. Karate isn't that much about the actual hand-to-hand combat as it is more about self confidence and self control. Self control and power over emotions and actions are going to help him a lot.

Get him interested in Some sport. This will really get him into shape and the early influence with sports will keep him in shape.

Other than that, make sure he does well in school. Get him to be a good student through high school. If he keeps his grades high and and is real active in the community, he could be good enough for: Annapolis the Naval Academy, West Point the Army Academy, Colorado Springs the Air force Academy, or even the Coast Guard Academy in Colorado.

If his father's side of the family were all enlisted and he wants your son to be enlisted also, that's fine. But I think he'd also agree that you urge your son to aim for one of these military academies. Instead of being enlisted, as a graduate from an academy, you start off as an officer.

As an officer, you get better "perks"; better sleeping quarters, better pay, better health benefits, his peers(being other officers) are held at a higher standard so he is in with a better group. To sum it up, everything is better as an officer rather than being enlisted.

Feel free to email me for a little bit more information. How do I prepare my son for the military?
Make sure he values education, is physically fit, and learns to problem solve; perhaps he can go to West Point, Naval Academy, or Air Force Academy then and earn way more than enlisted men. Also, respect his opinions if he doesn't wish to join the military when he's older. The military basically takes care of everything the soldiers need to know, so just make sure he has a good life and lots of opportunities until then so he knows what he's good at and really wants to do (even if he chooses to join the military, he'll specialize, therefore he'll need to know what interests him), just like you'd do with any other kid. Honestly, I think grooming kids is a little sick; they should be able to choose their own career path, especially when you're grooming them for one that is so dangerous. He should serve the country because he wants to, not because he's been told that's what he's going to do his whole life. How do I prepare my son for the military?Do you really think its right to start grooming your son for military service at such a young age? Joining the military can be a great thing, but it is a decision he should make, not you. You wouldn't want him to ever feel as if he was "forced" into the situation. I would just encourage him to be an active fit young man. Team sports are great, but let him discover his own interests. Boy scouts are fine too because they promote similar ideals. Who knows though he might be more interested in music or art and you should not discourage him from these things because that might create feeling of resentment if you do.
keep him in swim and just get him involved in a lot of sports, i recommend getting him into water polo in a couple of years. i played through high school and it got me in really good shape. but he also needs to run, i was able to swim for a long time at a fast rate but if you told me to go run a mile i would have a hard time. as for boy scouts, put him in and see how he likes it, if he doesnt seem thrilled then take him out.How do I prepare my son for the military? No, DEFINITEY not boy scouts. Go with sports, football to be more precise. because if you start him off early he will be in great shape and have a lot of confidence when he signs up, which will both come in handy for boot camp the like. I am dead serious i promise you that will make him a way tougher and stronger individual. How do I prepare my son for the military?
He is only six. Earth, the military and you might not exists in twelve years time. Let him do what he enjoys - his life, not yours.

    Peace.
One thing you can do to see if you can handle being in the military is to visit a morgue and watch an autopsy or two.How do I prepare my son for the military?
yes, do alot of camping get him survival books really get him into science. teach him how to make things instead of buy things. send him to a military school
honestly this DISCUSTS ME !!!!!!!!!! your already WANTING TO PUT YOUR KID INTO THE MILITARRY ... let him live a normal f***** life dont prepare him for anything but life !! let him choose himself ! are you !

The courts have never held that the provision of military chaplains by the armed forces is unconstitutional?

despite the fact that chaplains are religious leaders who are employed by and under the authority of the U.S. government. What arguments might the courts use to defend the military chaplain system? The courts have never held that the provision of military chaplains by the armed forces is unconstitutional? They have not. Chaplains are non-partisan and provide a service to all service members regardless of their religious convictions. The courts have never held that the provision of military chaplains by the armed forces is unconstitutional?
As an atheist,I think the whole idea is quite silly BUT.....

    from http://atheism.about.com/od/churchstatem鈥?/a>

"The rationale for military and congressional chaplains is that when the government calls people away from home to render services to their nation, it takes them away from their home churches and religious community, a potential infringement on their right to free exercise of their religion. Doesn't it make sense, then, for the government to make up for that by providing some means of religious support? "

Frankly, the position should be open to ALL religions and also to atheists. The courts have never held that the provision of military chaplains by the armed forces is unconstitutional? There is nothing in the constitution that prevents military chaplains,

Separation of church and State, is NOT in the constitution.

How can a civilian get a flight on a military jet?

I know reporters, celebrities and politicians have been allowed to get flights with the Blue Angels or other military jets. Does anyone know the protocol or qualifications to arrange such a flight? How can a civilian get a flight on a military jet? There are a number of former military jet fighters in private hands and you can purchase a ride starting at about $1,000. For about $20,000 you can buy an excursion to Russia and fly a Mig.How can a civilian get a flight on a military jet?
Joy riding in an operational military jet is a cardinal no-no. I knew a training squadron Commanding Officer who was relieved of his command (a career ender) because he took his 16 yr old son for a joy ride in the back seat of a trainer. Try the Blues. That's your best chance. How can a civilian get a flight on a military jet?Join the military stop being a civilian.

I'd like to see regular Joe and regular Jane get flights too...

Maybe if you pester them enough in a positive manner you'll luck up and score...it might even be more fun if it is with a tactical squadron.

There is a ton of politics involved with military performers and the aircraft they fly.

When I was in the US Navy it was a ton of red tape just to get on a plane guard mission...i.e. go on a helicopter ride while out to sea....

If there is a will there is a way good luck.
Go to Moscow - you can buy a "joy ride" on a MiG-29 trainer for 30 minutes or so - going supersonic for a minute or two, zoom climb to FL450 or 500, get a few turns and loops with 3 Gs loading - and come back to talk about it - Some 10 years ago, a friend of mine did that - was US$ 7,500 for it - nowadays, with the fuel costs being double, it is probably double rate as well - Enjoy the ride (unless your face turns green) -How can a civilian get a flight on a military jet?Hi there,

You can get a flight on an ex. military yet. Companies such as Adrenalin.com.au offer the chance to pay for a flight in a Mig-29. The only thing is it costs $25,000.How can a civilian get a flight on a military jet?
Besides getting elected to the US Senate or being a reporter, you can buy one in an older warbird; see www.warbirdalley.com
I'll try to sum this up with an analogy. You'd have a better chance of keeping Anna Kournikova as your mistress as you would getting a ride. How can a civilian get a flight on a military jet?

Prove me wrong! Good luck man! What branch of the US military sould I join?
I am in the Army and I can tell you that the Marines snipers, are freaking awesome... I do know the Army Snipers are used a lot more in Afghanistan and Iraq, they are spread around cities and assist Army units or Marine Units. Army Snipers also are used as scouts. I do not know much about Marine Snipers... but they are an elite group, I would say they are the more elite than Marine Recon and MARSOC...What branch of the US military sould I join? You need to speak with recruiters from both branches and see what they have to say. In addition, buy an asvab book and study for the test. I know that you are into sniper school right now, but once you see other jobs that they have, you might want something else. The military has all kinds of jobs. What branch of the US military sould I join?
Well if you want to be a scout sniper than you should join marines because that would look better when you have to join delta force or army rangers because they specialize in spec ops which is scout sniping. What branch of the US military sould I join?taz mania is stupid!!!!

What is a typical weeks meal like in the military?

If you have been in any branch of the military - state side or overseas could you please answer this trivial question. What is a typical weeks menu like? Do you get real potatoes or instant? Do you get real eggs or are they powdered? What is a typical weeks meal like in the military? It is similar to a school cafeteria.

A typical menu for breakfast would be: eggs (usually fresh), bacon or sausage, grits, potatoes, gravy, biscuits. Fruit bar.

Lunch dinner is about the same. You have a short order line which is hamburger, fries, chicken nuggets or something similiar. Main line would be a meat selection usually chicken, potatoes or rice, vegetable. Salad bar. What is a typical weeks meal like in the military?
It varies greatly depending on where you are at... and what branch you are in...

I was in the army and stateside most chow halls are like cheap Golden Corals... you have a salad bar, and a sandwich bar, and a main line with a few different choices. (like a hamburger, chicken breast, mac+cheese) but most of them are really strict on the amount of food you can take and to me it was never worth the money they take for it. Usually there is nothing healthy to eat and depending on which cooks cook it, in can be good or terrible. Stateside they have real eggs (hard boiled) and real potatoes (diced)

Overseas its a little different. If you are on a main base, the food is better than it is in the US. The chow hall on one of the bases I was on had no limit on the amount of food you could get and always had steak, crab, chicken, a great sub bar (more than most subways have) pretty much everything you can think of. They even had a baskin robbins!

BUT when you get sent off the main base or if you are stuck on a FOB or something for your entire tour, the food quality goes down dramatically. Most of the places I was at was MRES all meals except for dinner. The food they use for "hot chow" in those places is quite amazing... not that it tastes good but in is somehow edible after it has sat in the sun for 3 months (meat and all).. They only have like 12 meals on most of those places and they are pretty basic and pretty nasty... No real food at all because if it was real it would spoil (literally sits in the sun until they cook it for months at a time)

Food is one of the main reasons the people on the small bases HATE the people that sit on the main bases in an AC office while deployed... because not only does it suck terribly, but there is usually not enough to go around and fill everyone up...

If you want to join the military and get good food, join the chair-force or join the navy and work on a submarineWhat is a typical weeks meal like in the military?Im currently on fourth deployment... and the food all depends on where you go. Trust me tho, its nothing like home. The food is very repetitive and gets old fast. What is a typical weeks meal like in the military?
I have both Air Force and Army experience. Air Force would vary from base to base but I can tell you I ate some really good food. Lots of omelets, chicken cordon bleu, crescent sandwiches, steak, lobster, fajitas, all kinds of stuff. Army wasnt bad either...a lot more MRE's, which arent bad (especially the salsa chicken). What is a typical weeks meal like in the military?Mostly it's beer and fast food, with a generous helping of snacks and coffee.

How to get adjusted to military lifestyle?

I will be going to the army in September, and I will be away from home for 6 months. Not only will I feel homesick, but I also have to learn to adapt to the military life, every day for 6 months.

The thing is, I used to love things like the army and the police, the training and all that. I always wanted to be a well-trained person for survival. But one year ago, I just stopped feeling that. So how do I get adjusted to military life? How to get adjusted to military lifestyle? You have to adjust your mindset. You cannot be emotional or carry any emotional baggage with you. You have to go in with a clear mindset at all times...

And respect and treat your gay peers as you would like to be treated yourself, discrimination should not be tolerated in the military. How to get adjusted to military lifestyle?Adjusting to life in the army won't be as hard as you think.

It's like every other job out there, you have peers, subordinates, and people of higher rank. Basic training, and AIT are designed to help you adjust. You'll make friends where ever you go and they will help you if you are having trouble. The army won't ruin your life, and if you decide it's not for you then do not reenlist, finish your contract, get out and use your GI bill to go to school and find something you do likeHow to get adjusted to military lifestyle?Boris.....trust me...you will adjust to life in the military, period. One of the things that makes us human is our ability to adapt...to adjust and move forward.

My question to you is if a year ago you stopped enjoying things like the army, police, training and self achievement through your efforts....why did you still enlist in the army? And hey, here's a secret even a former US Army Officer like me would never admit.....95% of everyone who joins the military gets homesick at least once after you arrive at your training base. Of the other 5%... 3% came from such a terrible home life that they will never get home sick....and the remaining 2% who say they never got homesick even for 1 minute...they're lying! How to get adjusted to military lifestyle?
I was at 10 places over half the world in 4 years having a blast. I almost forgot all about people back home, I was having too much fun

What is the value of military veterans holding public office?

For a voter considering which candidates for public office to support and/or endorse, might a candidate with military experience offer unique and more valuable insight than one who does not have military experience? What is the value of military veterans holding public office?Military service can give tremendous experience in many areas. You meet people from all over the world and discover that color, ethnicity, and religion have little to do with a person's worth. You get to see foreign lands and cultures from a safe perspective. You find out that you can live without all the niceties that you grew up with. The motto: "the army builds men" has a lot of truth to it.
On the other hand, being a non productive member of society and getting paid for it can lead to an attitude of being owed. I was ashamed when I got my first army pay because I had done nothing productive to earn it. I was just there. I did not like the waste of time and material or the dumbed down attitude of working to the lowest common denominator.
So, like most everything else, it is what you make of it. There is no doubt that John McCain has experience and insight that Obama and Clinton can never have. That can be good in some facets of governing but skew the attitude away from the more social side of governing. I told my children that if you are not a Democrat when you are 21, you have not heart. But if you are not a Republican when you are 40, you have not brain. Obviously, we need industrial and social programs. What is the value of military veterans holding public office?Everyone offers something unique to public office. What a military veteran offers is that he or she at some point in his/her life decided that the country and our way of life is more important than his own life. To this end he offered himself up to protect the nation. That doesn't mean that he isn't a dumbXXX and could be a complete idiot in elective office. What is the value of military veterans holding public office?Being a veteran does not make someone a gifted politician. Jimmy Carter was a Naval Nuclear submarine officer and he is not held as one of the top presidents. One of the worst vets to hold public office was Ulysses S. Grant. He was great on the battle field but horrible as a president. What really matters is the candidates understand of how things work and the ability to make good judgments that benefit the country or community that they live in. By the way, I am a veteran so this is not an opinion from someone with no military experience.

Why is Obama (the Commander in Chief) going to allow the smallest military pay raise in a generation?

The entire US military will see a 1.9% pay raise in 2011; the smallest in almost 50 years. With troops in harms way, why is he insulting the military with such a miniscule pay increase when they're already underpaid? Why is Obama (the Commander in Chief) going to allow the smallest military pay raise in a generation?Well first the president can't give pay raises in this case, see Congress for the power. Some folks would say having a secure job with good benefits looks pretty good with the current economy. Why is Obama (the Commander in Chief) going to allow the smallest military pay raise in a generation?
This latest recession was deflationary. In that context a 1.9 percent pay raise is a pretty good raise in terms of cost of living which drops via deflation. Why is Obama (the Commander in Chief) going to allow the smallest military pay raise in a generation?Obama wants a military just big enough to supply him with planes and helicopters and bands to insure he is treated like a king.
Obama has ALWAYS Hated and Despised our Military.

    USN CT3

***** Note******** Those boys are right that Congress sets Military Pay. BUT-------- it's whatever Obama wants! Why is Obama (the Commander in Chief) going to allow the smallest military pay raise in a generation? As a military man...

    1. Obama doesn't set that stuff, congress does. You conservatives really need to learn the difference between the branches of government.

    2. We're in a recession. That is a much higher pay raise than the public is getting. Adjusted for inflation, it's quite generous. Why is Obama (the Commander in Chief) going to allow the smallest military pay raise in a generation?
And were they not under paid before our president took office? And have you never heard about

the recession which by the way he did not create? And have you ever heard about congress the senate and economics? Could be one of these factors or a combination or all of them could have a great deal to do with the military pay raise.
If you have more, you can personally give it to them

The economy is tight, 1.9% is too highWhy is Obama (the Commander in Chief) going to allow the smallest military pay raise in a generation?
He cut the seniors cost of living for 2 years plus, of course government and employees get all they need.
It's all about cut-n-spend politics. One Big @$$ Mistake America is about weakening this country ever chance him %26amp; his followers can get. From everything from huge slashes in the defense budget (FY) to his bowing routines before certain heads of states, it really does not surprise me that the men %26amp; women of military must take it once again on the chin by these jokers!
    1. The 1.9% pay raise, is in Obama's Defense budget, that's the raise that Obama wants to give to the military.

So saying, Congress determines the actual pay raise, doesn't mean anything.

Hopefully Congress will tell Obama hes nuts and we are not gonna give the military the smallest pay raise in 50 years.

But it is 100% on Obama, that he only ask for a 1.9% pay raise in his 2012 Defense Budget.

Just as the pay gap between the military and civilians grew from 4% to 12% under Clinton, because he didn't want to give the military pay raises.

It seems Obama is following in the same liberal footsteps.

  • What is your opinion about people serving in the military ?

Do you believe it's the duty of all healthy people to serve in the military or should they have a choice ? What is your opinion about people serving in the military ?I grew up in a military family, and therefore have known more military personnel than I can even estimate. From that perspective, I think it really should be voluntary. There is a certain mental and emotional outlook and personality that you really need if you're to be a reliable military member, and getting random people off the street and forcing them into basic training seems like a really bad idea to me.What is your opinion about people serving in the military ?
I believe some form of national service should be required of every American. The Korean system is a good model to consider. Able Korean males must serve in one of three capacities during their late teens:

    - military

    - riot police

    - emergency (medical) responders

If we required our teens to serve in the military, Peace Corps, or local emergency response organizations for two years, many of our nation's ills would be sidetracked.

Teenage unemployment would be virtually eliminated, individuals would have a distinctly different understanding of the world around them, and most importantly individuals would have some concept of the meaning of the word service.

Duty falls to those willing to accept it. Duty does not ask if you are an expert; it asks if you are available. What is your opinion about people serving in the military ?it should definitely be a choice, as long as there are men willing and strong enough to make that choice. forcing men into that, especially at the age most men enlist, would be asking for trouble. and our men serving know what they're doing and they're proud to serve. we should keep it that way.

ALSO...and this is for those narrowminded idiots out there who think the military is only for mindless people who want to kill.... these men are some of the bravest strongest men alive and they are doing what they feel is their duty and they're dying and watching their best friends die overseas so you can have the freedom to sit on your lazy *** back and ***** about them being mindless killers. maybe if you were half the type of men our military is made of, you'd have a little respect.
I am a veteran of a war that everybody wanted to forget. When I came home there were no parades, no welcoming parties and for years people wanted to forget about Viet Nahm. Just like Viet Nahm their are American Companies profiting from this war in Iraq I respect those that went to Iraq but sadly it is not their fault that our leaders are in another war very much like Viet Nahm that we will really win nothing much out of it and will end up rebuilding what we tore down..

What I really hate to see that our service members ( if they make it ) finally get to come home will be treated the same way because know one wants to remember this war either. There, are always sacrifices in any war no matter how people here feel about it..Until you have served you will never know the sacrifice that these military people are making for you.

It should be a choice. Only in case of a world war then all healthy people should serve but you shouldn't have to worry about that because if it's a world war it will depend on who ever gets their nukes to land on the opposing enemy first will determine who wins...What is your opinion about people serving in the military ?I believe they should be compelled to serve, but not forced to serve. If someone doesn't want to, then they shouldn't. You can't trust your life to someone who's heart isn't in it, and i heart matters when your life is on the line. Not everyone is cut out for the military, but personally I have always felt it was my duty and part of being a true American, sacraficing for freedom like the first Americans had to.

I also think that the Military could give direction and values to young men, and women with none to speak of. For example, I roomed with a guy at MEPS(Military Entrance Processing Station) who joined instead of going to prison. He quit drugs, and had the goal of making MP(Military Police) within a year, when his Security Clearance would be good again, which means that he isn't going to be committing anymore crimes. What is your opinion about people serving in the military ?
I think each man and woman in uniform has volunteered to belong to something bigger than themselves. And I'm thankful we still find such people in the heart of the nation. However, I never want to see a return to forced service by way of the draft. It is a waste of government funds. We have enough problems getting people to serve on jury duty. The people, as a whole, are too wrapped up in themselves to step forward and take the oath of enlistment. So, we leave it to the few and the faithful.
Where would this nation be without soldiers. It is only a coward that curses them.

Fortunately, as a free nation we are afforded the privilege to volunteer or not. While this is not always the case it has been the practice through almost all of our wars. But if duty calls then it is our responsibility to serve. What is your opinion about people serving in the military ?
Looking back to my days as a draftee, I think everyone should serve, as a draftee. All the soldiers that I saw getting in trouble, were the enlistees. Us draftees were all smart enough to keep our mouths shut and stay out of trouble. However, I ultimately returned to the Army and served a total of 24 years. As for the people that refer to us military types as killers, they are usually the ones who also thing the police don't serve any useful function. To them I say. Next time you're getting your a$$ kicked, call a druggie, I'm sure he will be a big help.
In a free nation, military service should be voluntary. Many of us in the service would not want to serve alongside draftees anyway. I can look to the man on my left and right, knowing that they have chosen to be in this uniform of their own free will.

I think military service is beneficial in many ways, it builds character, confidence and useful life skills. That being said, it is definitely not for everyone, and I recommend that anyone considering the service do their homework before joining.

Many of us are in the service because we don't want our loved ones to be in the places we go. I do not want my brother, sister or cousins to be walking the streets of downtown baghdad, so I have no problem picking up the rifle and doing it myself. Some of us are good cooks, some of us can fix motors, some of us are good at heart surgery. Likewise some of us excel at the military arts.

For an interesting take on military service and citizenship, check out the book "Starship Troopers" by Robert Heinlein (it is nothing like the movie.)

    Hope that helped.
All people serving our country...The United States of America...had a choice and chose to serve. Only those that chose to serve do so.

If you wish to do so join on of the branches of the armed service.

America is a land of opportunity and choice, use yours, but do not inflict your choices on others. All healthy people should exercise their own choices.
I truly feel sorry for all the people that spat back at this question with the "killer and murderer" bullsh!t. It must be painful to be that stupid. I guess they've never heard of chaplains, medics, cooks, transport, mechanics, admin clerks, or maintenance just to name a very select few jobs that don't involve "killing or murdering".

Anyway, to answer your question, I think it would be good to give everyone the discipline that people in the military get instilled in them, but to mandate military service... I'm not sure about that.

I think that is one of the reasons that the U.S. military kind of stands out is because everyone that is in wants to be in and chose to do it for one reason or another and takes pride in their job.

I personally wouldn't want someone like half the pukes that answered this question serving next to me just because they were told they had to.
Uhh, they do have a choice. And I thank everyone of them. Veterans Day is coming up Tue. My dad was in WW2 believe it or not. I'm gonna give him a card, cook, bake him a cake, and just be extra nice and catery. For that one day that is. ^_^ Thanks dad, and all the veterans, and friends, and brave people in the military.
The current all volunteer force is working correctly. There is some skew in demographics however, The Southern US is represented dissaproportionally to the New England areas for example.

However, like a occupation, the military should not be forced to work with people who don't want to be there.
I think it should be a choice, the military isn't for every one, but then again there is alot of benefits such as college credit. Furthermore, i think it should be a choice but a preferably people should go to college and the military is one way to do it...
A "duty" would seem to imply ease of deployment. Given the ease with which any fool in the Oval Office can do so upon a whim I'd have to say that,no, it sounds like a bad idea though one that otherwise could strengthen the character of our youth were the former not true.
I believe it should be voluntary...but am appalled at some of the comments left here. Our men and women in uniform fight for your right to even use this computer you ungrateful pricks! Guess what though? When s!@# goes down...you'll be looking for the first man or woman in uniform to protect you! Bet you won't insult them then, will you? Go play your stupid war video games so that you can pretend you are half the man or woman that they are!
It is absolutely a choice. A choice that none of you people sitting here answering that they are "murderers" or "stupid" are brave enough to make. Lucky you that there are enough brave men and women to protect YOUR civil liberties so that you don't have to. You can sit at home on a website and bash them. How dare you!
I joined to better my self, and to serve my country.

I figure that my presence in the Army means that when I get sent over seas, some one with a family and loved ones who's already over there will get to ship out and be with them.

it helps to think of others.
i believe that the military should remain an all voluntary force, but still it would be nice if everyone had to do it if only to respect what its like to be part of a group of people that voluntarily give up their rights so that everyone else can have theirs
I speak as an American: The armed forces should remain a volunteer army. The numbers will naturally increase and decrease. We have adequate numbers to support our military endeavors, but can not take on another front.
Of course it should be choice. Not everybody agrees with using force to solve problems, and not everyone is physically or mentally or emotionally cut out to be a killer. So there has to be choices.
    It is totally their choice.

    Because the draft is nonexistent.

This is why we do not see the big anti-war protests like we had in the '60s. No draft.
I think we're awesome. But if I wanted to live in a country with compulsory military service, I would move to a country with that system.
Boot camp for everyone would be an awesome idea... But there are alot of people that shouldnt be in the military.. Its not for everyone..
looking at most of the answer on this question i am dumb and a murder! grow up people. if u can not support your military leave usa! Its 100% choice to improve each life!
we do have a choice. my friend just got back from boot camp and training yesterday!
no. you should see what some of the people in the military do. if you want to kill innocent people in the name of america, you should leave the country.
it's not the duty of healthy people as so proclaimed by the military

and once they are in they are brainwashed

it has happened to many of my friends : (
A CHOICE!!! MURDER IS MURDER IS MURDER!
they should come home. why should they fight? Shouldn't be a war to begin with.
If you serve you deserve to get shot.
