In some countries every young person must serve 2 years of military service. However, many people, for religious, political, or personal reasons do not want to or refuse to serve. So with mandatory service you will have descension in the ranks, soldiers unwilling to fight, sabotage, defection, disorganization, lack of respect of authority and hierarchy. The only way to then overcome those shortcomings is through force. You will serve, do as you're told, or else face imprisonment or death.



Some people will make better soldiers than others. A fighting force comprised of people committed to their duty will be more effective than one containing soldiers that are not committed.What are the pros and cons of a military draft?OMG!



Yeah, I would be absolutely mortified if I got drafted.! So no, please for the love of God, do not make this mandatory! It would be great for volunteer service, maybe earn money for college.



I do not want to imagine a scared kid out of high school, forced to learn to shoot people and carry a gun--what that would do with his psychee (?sp). Look at other countries. They do not show a lot of compassion toward their fellow man. It is at an impressionable age for a kid that this would happen. So no, I'm sorry, I do not believe in this.



Some kids are born to do this kind of work. I know a 13-year-old that knows he wants to be in the army--he's known it since he was very young! It takes a special kind of person to do this. Well, I'll tell you how it was in 1969. We had another incredibly stupid war going. And there wasn't a conversation you had with anybody which didn't contain news of protests, meetings or sit-ins. We were all up for the draft, and Nixon was busy making out our death warrants. If we had the draft now, we'd have widespread protests.



But that was the smartest thing Nixon ever did - he got rid of the draft. So now the right wing can start their wars without any fear that anybody will protest.
