What would be an apporpriate dress to wear to a military ball?

It's not necessarily a real military ball because its just for high school Jr ROTC. I'm not sure if i should get an extravegant dress or something alittle more subtle. Any suggestion?What would be an apporpriate dress to wear to a military ball?I'm thinking like a nice dress but not something "extravagant" like a ball gown. Probably a nice cocktail dress or a dress that should fall between the tops of your knees to the bottom of your knees, not to the floor and maybe ankle length. The color should be fun and age-appropriate and could be in a metallic or sheen.
