Why is there always a display of military might at large sporting events?

Whether it be the Superbowl or the World Series, there is always a display of United States Military Might at these large sporting events. You might see Jets flying around, or you might see a well-known military figure show up at these sporting events.



Why is this the case, and what does that say to you?Why is there always a display of military might at large sporting events?It wears me out. It has nothing to do with making us feel safe at the event. What the hell is a jet fighter going to do to keep us safe at a football game. Target a potential bad guy in the crowd with a 2000 pound bomb? That would kill us all.



I think it is smply because most people think it is "cool" and it adds to that pregame sense of patriotism that happens at every sporting event (national anthem etc.)



To be honest, I'd rather them save some money and use the jets for training exercises and national security issues rather than wasting gas to fly over a football stadium.Why is there always a display of military might at large sporting events?

We have always done that, since the First Roosevelt, with his giant Navy sailing every where.

We are just showing our military power,

we are exercising the fact that we can beat any country in open war.

I always like to see our military at these events. It's purely ceremonial, but a great many sports' fans respect the military. And there is no doubt that the positive PR makes for potential recruiting opportunities as well.
They restrict airspace above big events and the jets enforce the restriction.
Contrary to what seems to be a common assumption these days, nothing that we enjoy as "recreation" exists in a vacuum. Those pursuits which distract us the most from everyday realities are still brought to us by the efforts of others. You would not be in those stands if not for the team, the city and the country.



It is only fitting, therefore, that a moment of appreciation is given to each...From the pre-game ceremonies each team normally has to honor "local heros" to the military color guard presenting the Flag, these are simply reminders that the game you enjoy and that others play are still the product of someone else's labor...and the price that is sometimes attached.
