What is the highest rank you can reach in the military?

I am wondering because on package received by my friend (his cousin is in the military) there was a labeling that said Lt. Corporal or something similar to this. How far is the highest rank and how do you reach a high rank? What is the highest rank you can reach in the military? The label probably said Lt. Colonel. The highest rank is 5 star general. Or just 'General'. You reach that level by starting as a Leuitenant and working your way up the ranks of officers. After Colonel to become a general it's basically based on merit. It would take 40+ years and unparalled service to reach the top rank. What is the highest rank you can reach in the military?
There's no such thing as a Lt. Corporal. The Army, Marines, and Air Force all have a Lieutenant Colonel rank. It's the fifth office rank achieved. In order to achieve this rank, you must first be commissioned as an officer in your respective branch. Then, as you continue in your military career, you receive promotion based on merit.

It might have just said Corporal, in which case the cousin would be the fourth enlisted rank in the Army or Marines, or a Lance Corporal (third enlisted rank in the Marines). Lance Corporal is earned by either spending 9 months as a PFC or 6 months as a Private and 8 months as a PFC. Corporals are appointed to their rank based on meeting minimal scores that vary depending on job. What is the highest rank you can reach in the military?General of the Armies of the United States is the absolute highest military rank. Not to be confused with the 5 star General of the Army which is actually a lower rank. The rank of General of the Armies of the United States was bestowed to George Washington in 1976 and a law was created that no officer shall ever out rank him (even though General Pershing was awarded the same rank during WWI). They are the only two people to ever hold that rank officially even though General Douglas Mcaurthur was considered for it and General Grant held a similar rank but differently named. Just a bit of random history associated to the subject.
The current highest ranking officer in the military is Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS). He is a 4 star Admiral. The CJCS is, by law, the most senior military member. Directly below him are the 4 star heads of each branch, the Chief of Naval Operations, Commandant of the Marine Corps, The Chief of Staff of the Army, and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force. What is the highest rank you can reach in the military? The actual highest rank is General of the Army which is a 5 star general. The last time someone held this position was 1950. Currently the highest rank is General which is a 4 star general. Your friends cousin is probably a Lance Corporal which is on the enlisted side and is not a high rank at all. What is the highest rank you can reach in the military?
Highest rank is general (Army, Air Force, Marines) or admiral (Navy). Your friend's cousin is probably either a Lance Corporal (Marine Corps...and my bet) or a Lieutenant Colonel (all of them but Navy).
The highest enlisted rank is Sergeant Major of the Army. The highest rank is General of the Armies but this has only been given to two people. What is the highest rank you can reach in the military?
I assume it's the president but there has been a couple 5 star generals(usually only appointed in war times)
