Although the official criteria sound fairly generic for an act of heroism, the Medal of Honor is awarded only in exceptional circumstances. In the 200+ year history of our nation, less than 3500 have been awarded, as compared to 100-150,000 Silver Stars. What we are seeing today though is that many excellent servicemen are meeting this criteria but not receiving the MOH. It almost seems as though an unofficial criteria is being applied that only posthumous awards may be issued.
