How long before a move can you get on military housing waiting list?

We are moving to my husband's new duty station in late Spring, and my question is does anyone know how far ahead (if at all) we can get on a wait list for military housing?? We are stateside. Or do we just move down there and Then look for a place? you are not eligible until he actually checks IN to the new command. SOME housing offices will allow you to get on the list sooner but you will not move up the list until he checks in.
