One empire that has eluded my understanding is the Ottoman Empire. I know they conquered Constantinople, but why? What military power did they bring to the table allowing them to conquer a huge empire from Europe to Africa? Did they any special advantage? Or was just brute force? What was the military power/advantage of the Ottoman Empire? The innovations in using gun powered, %26amp; the Janissaries.
When they conquered Constantinople, they used huge peaces of artillery. At that time, Byzantium wasn鈥檛 the huge empire it used to be, but Constantinople was well fortified. Sultan Mehmed II orchestrated the conquest of Constantinople with several innovations. In addition to the artillery, he managed to move 70 ships over the mountains to attack the city from 2 directions.
The Janissaries were technically the slaves of the Sultans. They were taking at a young age %26amp; given some of the best education %26amp; training in the world of their time. They grow to become the Sultans elite infantry. %26amp; they were a formidable force. What was the military power/advantage of the Ottoman Empire?Like everything the Islamic and Asian armies always have practiced- power in numbers rather than skill and tactics.
They did have some ingenius breakthroughs with gunpowder, but they were soon surpassed.
