Also cpol.army.mil is the army hiring website..
As prior military you have an advantage over non-military on getting into the federal fire service. Also they more often are willing to hire under-trained people and train them PLUS the money is good and you can buy back your military time to add towards retirement as a federal firefighter...
Your military time also counts toward senority, increased sick and annual leave and gives you more protection against reduction in force layoffs (they will lay off non-military prior to any military)How to become a firefighter after getting out of the military? The fire service now and moving forward is largely an EMS provider. My department runs on 85% medical calls. So becoming an EMT is something to think about. If you go to the big city route (FDNY, Vegas, LA, Detroit, etc) you will do mostly fire with some EMS.
I would first start by finding out if the area you live in has a combination (made up of full-time and paid-on-call or volunteer), paid-on-call, or volunteer fire department. If you have any of the three above, I would apply to that department. They must likely will send through a state certified fire academy and usually even cover the costs. As for tests/exams, usually for Fire I/II there is a written and a practical exam.
